Once considered part of the Pejepscot Purchase, but claimed by assigns of the Kennebec proprietors in 1761; a 1766 court decision recognized it as belonging to the heirs and assigns of Robert Gutch (the Gutch Claim)

With Phippsburg and West Bath was anciently called Small Point Neck

Boundary Changes

The southwestern portion of the town was set off to form West Bath in 1844, and part of that town was annexed in 1855
