1765 as a district from part of Falmouth; incorporated as a town in 1775

That part which lay on the Fore River (now South Portland) was anciently called Purpooduck; the southerly part was called Spurwink (Spurwincke)

Boundary Changes

Land was set off to Westbrook in 1852

Land was set off to form the new town of Cape Elizabeth in 1895, with the residue being renamed South Portland
