Cumberland County (set off from York County in 1760)

Incorporated

1658 from Black Point, Blue Point and islands; included the western edge of Spurwink, which now lies mostly in Cape Elizabeth; deserted in 1690, but reestablished in 1718

Previous Designations

Owascoag; Scarborow; Scarborrough; Scarboro

That land lying between the Spurwink and Saco Rivers was anciently referred to as Black Point (or Cammock's Patent); Stratton Island was another regional name

Dunston (Dunstan) once referred to the tract between the Scarboro and Nonesuch Rivers

Boundary Changes

Land was set off to Saco in 1841, and to Gorham in 1864

Stratton Island and Bluff Island (now in Old Orchard Beach) were set off at some point

Black Point, Blue Point, Eight Corners, Grand Beach, Higgins Beach, North Scarborough (North Scarboro; formerly Coal Kiln Corner, or Coal Kiln Corners), Oak Hill, Pine Point, Pleasant Hill, Prouts Neck, Rigby, Scarborough (Scarboro), West Scarborough (West Scarboro, Dunstan, Dunstan Corners, Dunstan's Corner), West Scarboro Station (former railroad station)

Nonsuch (Nonesuch) was an ancient name for a location east of Oak Hill
