Boundary Changes

Parts were set off to Washington County and Hancock County in 1789 (part of the latter regained in 1791), to Kennebec County in 1799, to Waldo County in 1827, to Androscoggin County and Sagadahoc County in 1854, and to Knox County in 1860


Shire Town

Pownalborough, 1760-1787 (courts located in that part later Dresden)

Pownalborough, half shire town, 1787-1799 (courts moved to that part later Wiscasset in 1794)

Hallowell (which then included Augusta), half shire town, 1787-99

Pownalborough (renamed Wiscasset in 1802), since 1799
